VESSEL HULL FITTER
Qualifications:
- Minimum of 2 years of relevant work experience is required.
- Must be at least a high school graduate.
- Apprenticeship or on-the-job training in a shipyard is required or highly preferred.
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and shipbuilding blueprints.
- Experience in steel cutting, shaping, fitting, alignment, and structural assembly.
- Familiarity with torches, plasma cutters, grinders, and other metalworking tools.
Knowledge of hull structures, bulkheads, decks, frames, and shipbuilding components is an advantage. - Physically fit and capable of performing demanding shipyard work.
- Safety-conscious and able to follow strict industrial and shipyard safety procedures.
- Reliable, hardworking, and able to work effectively as part of a team.
Responsibilities:
- Read and interpret technical drawings, shipbuilding blueprints, schematics, and reference lines to determine the correct positioning of hull components.
- Measure and mark steel plates, frames, bulkheads, decks, and other vessel structures according to specifications.
- Cut and shape steel materials using torches, plasma cutters, grinders, and other appropriate tools.
- Position and align hull sections, bulkheads, decks, frames, and other structural components using jacks, wedges, chain blocks, and related equipment.
- Check dimensions, alignment, levels, and fit-up to ensure components are correctly positioned.
- Secure steel components using tack welding or approved temporary fastening methods before permanent welding.
- Cut out and replace rusted, bent, damaged, or deteriorated sections of existing ship hulls.
- Assist welders and other shipyard personnel during vessel construction, repair, and maintenance activities.
- Inspect fitted components and report alignment, dimensional, or structural issues to supervisors.
- Follow shipbuilding specifications, work instructions, quality standards, and project requirements.
- Maintain tools and equipment in safe working condition.
- Follow strict shipyard safety procedures and properly use required personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Maintain a clean and organized work area.
- Perform other vessel fitting, fabrication, repair, and shipyard duties as assigned.
