Gabon Wood Industries is seeking an experienced Ranger to support forestry and logging operations through accurate boundary marking, forest surveying, tree inventory, GPS-based mapping, logging inspection, and post-logging monitoring. The role requires extensive field experience in logging operations, strong knowledge of Gabon forestry regulations, and the ability to manage and supervise forest management teams while ensuring compliance with safety standards and reduced-impact logging practices.

Qualifications:

• More than 5 years of working experience in logging operations.
• Basic French-speaking ability.
• Knowledge of Gabon forestry rules and regulations.
• Knowledge of applicable labour laws and requirements in Gabon.
• Proficient in the use of GPS, compass, and clinometer for forestry fieldwork and surveying.
• Ability to conduct forest boundary marking, layonnage, blocking, tree counting, and field surveying.
• Good understanding of logging operations, timber harvesting, skidding, forest blocks, and post-logging activities.
• Ability to accurately collect, record, verify, and report forestry field data.
• Ability to use GPS information for mapping, monitoring, and forest inventory purposes.
• Strong understanding of forest inspection procedures and environmental considerations associated with logging operations.
• Knowledge of Reduced Impact Logging (RIL) practices and forestry safety requirements.
• Good management and team supervision skills, with the ability to coordinate and monitor multiple field teams.
• Rigorous, organized, observant, and highly vigilant when conducting field inspections.
• Strong attention to detail when identifying trees, boundaries, terrain features, logging activities, and potential violations.
• Ability to work independently in challenging forest and outdoor environments.
• Good communication and reporting skills for coordinating with the Camp-in-Charge and management.
• Ability to identify operational problems and provide accurate field information for management decision-making.
• Strong commitment to safety, environmental protection, regulatory compliance, and responsible forestry practices.

Responsibilities:

• Perform clear and accurate forest boundary marking for log harvesting activities within terrains approved by the local authorities.
• Establish and maintain AAC (Annual Allowable Cut) boundary lines according to targets set by the Camp-in-Charge.
• Conduct layonnage and other required forest surveying activities according to operational targets.
• Count trees by parcel and accurately record information regarding terrain, rivers, hills, trees, and other field observations.
• Conduct blocking activities to divide approved forest areas into designated logging blocks.
• Refresh and verify forest boundaries every three months to ensure accurate field identification.
• Conduct on-site inspections of forest areas before boundary marking and block establishment.
• Identify and document terrain features such as rivers, hills, slopes, access points, and other geographical conditions.
• Conduct surveys of each designated block before the commencement of logging activities.
• Identify suitable and practical routes for transporting harvested logs from the forest to the designated stumping area.
• Conduct re-surveys and inspections of logging blocks after logging activities have commenced.
• Inspect trees and stumps to verify proper hammer marking, authorized harvesting, and compliance with logging requirements.
• Check harvested logs for compliance with size and harvesting requirements, including identification of undersized or improperly harvested logs.
• Monitor skidding operations and ensure logs are properly transported and accounted for.
• Ensure that all logs within a completed logging block are properly harvested and skidded before the block is closed.
• Verify that no harvested logs are abandoned and that authorized trees are not unnecessarily left standing after completion of operations.
• Inspect rivers and surrounding areas after logging activities and ensure required cleanup is completed.
• Ensure access points and completed logging entries are properly blocked or secured after logging activities.
• Conduct periodic and ad-hoc field inspections to identify intruders, unauthorized activities, or illegal loggers within company-controlled forest areas.
• Inspect forest roads, bridges, rivers, tree stumps, logging areas, and other infrastructure or environmental features and submit findings to management.
• Prepare accurate periodic forest inventory and operational reports based on field observations and collected data.
• Transfer and migrate information from GPS equipment for mapping, monitoring, and forest management purposes.
• Maintain accurate field records, maps, counting sheets, GPS information, inspection reports, and other forestry documentation.
• Report daily logging progress for each block to the Camp-in-Charge.
• Monitor logging activities to ensure compliance with approved plans, operational targets, and forestry requirements.
• Ensure logging operations comply with Gabon forestry rules and regulations, applicable labour requirements, safety standards, and company procedures.
• Promote and monitor the implementation of Reduced Impact Logging (RIL) practices to minimize environmental damage and unnecessary disturbance to the forest.
• Coordinate with logging, tagging, post-logging, fauna, social, and other forest management teams.
• Manage and supervise the Forest Management Team, including tagging, office, logging control, post-logging, illegal activity monitoring, fauna, and external social teams.
• Provide field observations and recommendations to management to support operational and forestry-related decision-making.
• Maintain vigilance in the forest and immediately report unusual activities, safety concerns, regulatory issues, or suspected illegal logging.
• Perform other field inspection, surveying, monitoring, and forest management duties assigned by management.
