Gill Group Ltd. is seeking a skilled and experienced HGV Mechanic for an employment opportunity in the United Kingdom. The successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining, inspecting, diagnosing, and repairing heavy goods vehicles to ensure they remain safe, reliable, roadworthy, and compliant with DVSA standards and current legislation. The role requires strong mechanical, electrical, diagnostic, pneumatic, and hydraulic skills, along with the ability to complete high-quality repairs efficiently and minimize vehicle downtime.
HGV MECHANIC
Qualifications:
- NVQ Level 3 in Heavy Vehicle Maintenance & Repair or an equivalent qualification.
- A time-served apprenticeship in HGV mechanics is preferred.
- IRTEC accreditation or willingness to obtain it is advantageous.
- Valid HGV Class 1 or Class 2 driving licence is desirable but not essential.
- Good knowledge of DVSA inspection standards and current legislation.
- Strong mechanical, electrical, and diagnostic skills specific to HGV systems.
- Competent in using diagnostic tools and software for modern truck systems, including MANcats, Tech Tool, TEXA, DAF DAVIE, and Scania SDP3.
- Ability to diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic faults.
- Ability to interpret technical manuals, wiring diagrams, service procedures, and vehicle specifications.
- Strong understanding of HGV braking, suspension, steering, drivetrain, hydraulic, and electrical systems.
- Ability to work under pressure, manage time effectively, and prioritize maintenance and repair tasks.
- Strong attention to detail with a clear focus on safety, quality, and compliance.
- Good communication and teamwork skills within a busy workshop environment.
- Capable of completing high-quality repairs independently to minimize vehicle downtime.
- Reliable, responsible, safety-conscious, and committed to maintaining professional workshop standards.
- Willing to work in the United Kingdom and comply with applicable workplace and site requirements.
Responsibilities:
- Maintenance & Servicing
- Perform routine HGV maintenance and servicing in accordance with manufacturer schedules and DVSA standards.
- Conduct safety inspections, pre-MOT checks, and scheduled fleet inspections.
- Inspect and service braking, suspension, steering, hydraulic, drivetrain, and electrical systems.
- Carry out preventive maintenance to identify potential faults before they result in vehicle breakdowns.
- Check vehicle components and systems for wear, damage, defects, and signs of failure.
- Ensure vehicles are maintained in safe and roadworthy operating condition.
- Diagnostics & Repair
- Diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic faults on HGVs.
- Perform engine, gearbox, clutch, and other major component repairs.
- Repair and maintain air brake, ABS/EBS, emissions, and DEF/AdBlue systems.
- Use appropriate diagnostic tools and software to identify and troubleshoot vehicle faults.
- Interpret diagnostic results and determine suitable repair procedures.
- Carry out roadside breakdown repairs when required.
- Replace, repair, adjust, and test vehicle components following manufacturer specifications.
- Conduct post-repair inspections and testing to confirm that vehicles are operating correctly.
- Compliance & Safety
- Ensure all maintenance and repair work complies with DVSA requirements, manufacturer specifications, and company standards.
- Maintain accurate inspection, servicing, maintenance, and repair records.
- Ensure all completed work meets required quality, safety, and compliance standards.
- Follow workshop health and safety procedures at all times.
- Identify and report safety hazards, vehicle defects, and other issues requiring attention.
- Ensure vehicles are safe and roadworthy before returning them to service.
- Workshop Support
- Coordinate with drivers, fleet managers, supervisors, and other workshop personnel regarding vehicle issues and repair requirements.
- Assist with MOT preparation and testing activities.
- Monitor the availability of parts, tools, and consumables required for maintenance and repairs.
- Support preventive maintenance initiatives designed to improve vehicle reliability and reduce downtime.
- Keep tools, diagnostic equipment, workstations, and workshop areas clean, organized, and safe.
- Complete repair and maintenance tasks efficiently while maintaining high-quality workmanship.
