Heavy Duty Diesel Mechanic
Qualifications:
- Minimum of 5 years of relevant work experience as a Heavy Duty Diesel Mechanic.
- Candidates must be at least a high school graduate.
- Mining industry experience is highly preferred.
- Advanced knowledge of diesel engine diagnostics, troubleshooting, repair, overhaul, and component rebuilding.
- Proficient in the use of electronic diagnostic equipment and computer-based service tools.
- Strong understanding of diesel engine systems, including fuel, cooling, exhaust, electronic controls, hydraulic, braking, and transmission systems.
- Ability to perform complex mechanical repairs in accordance with manufacturer service procedures and standard repair times.
- Experience using computerized maintenance management systems and service documentation software.
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and critical thinking skills.
- Excellent communication, teamwork, and customer service abilities.
- Proven leadership skills with the ability to mentor junior technicians.
- Strong planning, organizational, and decision-making skills.
- Committed to workplace health, safety, environmental compliance, and continuous improvement.
- Ability to identify service opportunities and contribute to operational efficiency.
- Physically fit and willing to work in demanding industrial and mining environments.
Responsibilities:
- Diagnose mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and transmission faults using advanced computer-based diagnostic equipment and electronic service tools.
- Inspect, dismantle, repair, overhaul, and rebuild diesel engines, drivetrains, transmissions, steering systems, brake systems, and other heavy equipment components.
- Repair or replace defective parts, reassemble mechanical systems, and ensure all repairs meet manufacturer specifications.
- Perform scheduled preventive maintenance, including oil changes, lubrication, engine tune-ups, filter replacements, and safety inspections.
- Conduct final inspections, operational testing, calibration, and validation of completed repairs to ensure equipment reliability.
- Troubleshoot fuel, cooling, exhaust, electronic control, and sensor systems.
- Complete repairs within standard repair times while following approved service procedures and technical manuals.
- Identify opportunities for equipment upgrades and recommend technical improvements.
- Maintain accurate maintenance records, work orders, service documentation, and parts replacement logs using computerized maintenance management systems.
- Inspect equipment for roadworthiness and recommend corrective actions where required.
- Coach and mentor junior mechanics and apprentices on proper repair techniques and safety procedures.
- Ensure compliance with workplace health, safety, environmental, and quality management systems.
- Participate in continuous improvement initiatives to increase equipment reliability and workshop efficiency.
- Communicate effectively with supervisors, management, customers, and other stakeholders regarding equipment status and repair progress.
- Perform other related mechanical maintenance duties assigned by management.
- Additional Operational Responsibilities
- Support site operations involving heavy equipment while ensuring compliance with company safety procedures and regulatory requirements.
- Conduct pre-operation inspections and safety checks on equipment before use.
- Assist in lifting operations, site preparation, scaffolding support, and general plant maintenance activities as required.
- Participate in safety programs including EPTWS, JSA, LMRA, O&I, and other company procedures.
- Follow the Personal Safety Management System (PSMS) and Work Management processes.
- Maintain high standards of housekeeping and waste management to ensure a safe work environment.
- Prepare and maintain accurate operational, maintenance, and inspection reports.
- Work effectively within a multicultural team environment and support safe operational practices.
