Accurate Infrastructure Solutions Limited is seeking an experienced Canvas Goods Maker for an overseas work opportunity in New Zealand. The successful candidate will be responsible for fabricating, assembling, installing, repairing, and finishing various canvas products according to patterns, measurements, drawings, and customer or project specifications. The role requires strong practical skills in measuring, cutting, industrial sewing, assembly, repairs, and the use of canvas materials, fittings, and fabrication tools.

CANVAS GOODS MAKER

Qualifications:

• Minimum 3 years of practical experience in canvas goods fabrication or a closely related trade is required.
• Preferably college level or a vocational graduate, which may qualify the applicant to waive the English Test, subject to applicable requirements.
• Relevant trade qualifications or formal training in canvas fabrication, textiles, sewing, or a related field is an advantage.
• Proven experience using industrial sewing machines and relevant hand tools.
• Strong practical skills in measuring, cutting, sewing, assembling, and repairing canvas products.
• Ability to accurately measure and cut canvas and other textile materials according to specifications.
• Skilled in operating industrial sewing machines and performing various types of seams and stitching.
• Ability to read and work from patterns, drawings, measurements, sketches, and job specifications.
• Experience attaching grommets, fasteners, fittings, buckles, eyelets, snaps, straps, and other hardware is highly desirable.
• Good understanding of canvas materials, fabrication methods, sewing techniques, and finishing processes.
• Ability to select suitable materials and fabrication methods based on product and project requirements.
• Strong attention to detail, accuracy, and quality workmanship.
• Ability to identify and repair defects in canvas products and textile assemblies.
• Good knowledge of proper tool and equipment handling and workshop safety procedures.
• Ability to work independently and complete fabrication tasks with minimal supervision.
• Good teamwork and communication skills when working with supervisors and other tradespeople.
• Physically capable of performing repetitive sewing, cutting, lifting, bending, and workshop activities.
• Reliable, hardworking, organized, and committed to meeting production schedules.
• Willing to follow workplace health and safety, quality, and production requirements.

Responsibilities:

• Fabricate and assemble canvas goods and textile products according to approved patterns, drawings, measurements, and job specifications.
• Measure canvas and other materials accurately before cutting and fabrication.
• Mark and cut canvas, fabric, webbing, and related materials according to required dimensions and patterns.
• Operate industrial sewing machines to produce strong, neat, and durable seams.
• Perform straight stitching, reinforced stitching, hemming, joining, and other required sewing techniques.
• Assemble canvas components using appropriate sewing, fastening, and fabrication methods.
• Attach grommets, eyelets, buckles, snaps, fasteners, straps, hooks, zippers, and other fittings as required.
• Install and secure hardware and fittings accurately to ensure proper functionality and durability.
• Read and interpret patterns, drawings, measurements, sketches, work orders, and job specifications.
• Select appropriate canvas materials, threads, fasteners, fittings, and other components based on the requirements of each job.
• Check materials for defects, damage, incorrect dimensions, or other issues before fabrication.
• Perform repairs and alterations on damaged, worn, torn, or defective canvas products.
• Replace damaged sections, stitching, fittings, straps, fasteners, and other components when necessary.
• Ensure accurate alignment of seams, edges, corners, openings, and fittings during fabrication.
• Apply appropriate finishing techniques to improve the appearance, strength, and durability of completed canvas products.
• Inspect completed products for dimensions, stitching quality, fit, strength, appearance, and overall workmanship.
• Identify and correct sewing defects, incorrect measurements, loose stitching, uneven seams, and other fabrication problems.
• Make adjustments to patterns, measurements, or finished products when required to achieve proper fit and specifications.
• Use hand tools and specialized fabrication equipment safely and effectively.
• Maintain industrial sewing machines, cutting equipment, hand tools, and other workshop equipment in good working condition.
• Replace or report worn needles, blades, machine parts, and other equipment requiring maintenance.
• Keep the work area, sewing machines, tools, materials, and storage areas clean and organized.
• Minimize material waste through accurate measuring, cutting, planning, and efficient use of canvas and other materials.
• Follow workplace procedures and quality standards throughout the fabrication process.
• Coordinate with supervisors, other fabricators, installers, and workshop personnel regarding production requirements and job specifications.
• Report material shortages, equipment problems, design issues, or production concerns to the supervisor.
• Complete assigned canvas fabrication and repair work within required production schedules.
• Follow workplace health and safety procedures when operating sewing machines, cutting tools, and other workshop equipment.
• Properly use required personal protective equipment (PPE) and maintain safe working practices.
• Perform other canvas fabrication, sewing, repair, assembly, and workshop duties assigned by management.
