Laboratory Chemist
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Industrial Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a related field, subject to the employer’s requirements.
- Relevant experience in laboratory testing, chemical analysis, or quality control is preferred.
- Experience in a cement manufacturing plant, construction materials laboratory, or industrial laboratory is an advantage.
- Knowledge of chemical analysis methods, sample preparation, and laboratory testing procedures.
- Familiarity with cement production processes, including raw material preparation, clinker production, and cement grinding, is an advantage.
- Understanding of cement quality parameters and applicable testing standards.
- Experience operating laboratory instruments and analytical equipment is preferred.
- Knowledge of XRF and XRD analysis is an advantage where these instruments are used.
- Ability to prepare chemical solutions, handle reagents, and perform laboratory calculations accurately.
- Strong analytical, numerical, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent attention to detail and commitment to accuracy in testing and documentation.
- Ability to interpret laboratory results and identify deviations from established specifications.
- Familiarity with laboratory quality assurance, equipment calibration, and recordkeeping procedures.
- Knowledge of chemical handling, laboratory safety, PPE, and proper waste disposal.
- Ability to work independently and coordinate effectively with laboratory, quality control, and production personnel.
- Good communication, organizational, and time-management skills.
Responsibilities:
- Conduct chemical and physical tests on raw materials, clinker, cement, and other materials used in cement production.
- Collect, receive, label, prepare, and process laboratory samples according to established procedures.
- Perform routine chemical analyses using appropriate laboratory methods and testing equipment.
- Analyze the chemical composition of cement materials and finished products to verify compliance with quality specifications.
- Conduct tests for key cement properties, including fineness, setting time, strength-related parameters, and other applicable quality indicators.
- Operate and maintain laboratory instruments and analytical equipment, such as analytical balances, pH meters, and other testing devices.
- Assist in operating and maintaining specialized analytical equipment, including X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) instruments, where applicable.
- Prepare chemical reagents, standard solutions, and testing materials in accordance with laboratory procedures.
- Calibrate laboratory equipment and verify instrument performance to maintain accurate and reliable test results.
- Record, calculate, review, and report laboratory test results accurately and promptly.
- Compare test results against established quality standards, specifications, and production requirements.
- Identify abnormal test results, deviations, and potential quality issues, and report findings to the laboratory supervisor.
- Coordinate with quality control, production, and process teams to support quality monitoring and corrective actions.
- Assist in investigating quality variations and determining possible causes of nonconforming materials or products.
- Maintain laboratory records, test reports, calibration logs, and other required documentation.
- Follow standard operating procedures, laboratory quality management practices, and applicable testing standards.
- Handle chemicals, reagents, samples, and laboratory waste safely and responsibly.
- Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) when handling chemicals and conducting laboratory tests.
- Maintain laboratory cleanliness, organization, and proper storage of chemicals, samples, and equipment.
- Monitor laboratory supplies and report shortages of reagents, consumables, and other testing materials.
- Follow workplace health, safety, and environmental requirements applicable to cement manufacturing and laboratory operations.
- Perform other laboratory testing, quality control, and analytical duties as assigned by management.
