FABRICATOR (LEAD WELDER)
Qualifications:
- Minimum 8 years of hands-on welding experience, including at least 3 years in a lead or supervisory role.
- Trade qualification in Welding/Fabrication (e.g., Certificate III in Engineering – Fabrication Trade).
- Current welder qualifications to AS 1796 (Cert. 3, 6, 7, 9, 10 desirable) or ASME Section IX, covering TIG (GTAW), MIG (GMAW), and SMAW processes across multiple materials and positions.
- Hot Work Permit Issuer competency; First Aid, Fire Warden, Working at Heights, and Confined Space certifications as required.
- Experience producing pressure-piping and structural fabrications to ASME B31.3 / AS/NZS 1554 / AS 4458 standards.
- Experience supervising welding teams, allocating tasks, and mentoring junior trades.
- Strong knowledge of weld traceability, weld map management, NDT scheduling, and QMS document control under ISO 9001.
- Experience in PNG or Pacific Island operational environments is advantageous.
Responsibilities:
- Technical & Welding Leadership
- Set and uphold welding standards across TIG, MIG, and MMA processes in the fabrication workshop.
- Allocate daily welding tasks based on project priorities, joint complexity, and welder qualifications.
- Demonstrate proper technique on complex joints, first-of-kind tasks, and difficult positions; coach team members on the bench.
- Authorize readiness to weld for each joint, ensuring WPS selection, fit-up, consumables, and welder qualification compliance.
- Drive a “right-first-time” culture, challenging poor practices and rewarding quality workmanship.
- Ensure all welds meet approved WPS, PQR, and relevant codes (ASME B31.3, AS/NZS 1554, AS 4458).
- Conduct in-process inspections and direct repair for defects before NDT.
- Lead root-cause analysis on rejected welds and implement corrective actions.
- Team Management & Mentorship
- Lead pre-start briefings, reviewing job priorities, safety focus, and quality objectives.
- Mentor TIG welders and junior fabricators on welding techniques, parameters, and code requirements.
- Identify training gaps and facilitate skill development for the team.
- Supervise work allocation and welding team performance, ensuring deadlines and quality standards are met.
- Equipment, Materials & Safety Management
- Maintain welding machines, torches, regulators, purge equipment, and ancillary tools in serviceable condition.
- Manage consumables, including filler metals, tungsten, and shielding gas, ensuring traceability and proper storage.
- Issue or verify hot-work permits within delegated authority and ensure compliance with HSE requirements, including fire watch and gas-test arrangements.
- Conduct JSAs and Take-5 risk assessments for non-routine welding scopes.
- Identify, control, and report welding-related hazards (fumes, UV, electric shock, fire, confined spaces).
- Stop work and escalate to Welding Coordinator if unsafe conditions arise.
