Aquaculture Technician

Qualifications:

• Vocational Education and Training (VET) courses such as certificates, diplomas and advanced diplomas prepare you for work by providing practical skills.
• Basic entry requirements, such as the completion of Year 10, may apply for some courses.
• Technicians at private fish farms or hatcheries rear, process, and market fish for commercial sale to food suppliers and aquariums.
• Aquaculture Technicians work on marine environments.

Responsibilities:

• Ensure that the laboratory remains in the high standard of order and hygiene.
• Supervise algae productions.
• Supervise and perform work in day-to-day husbandry including regular tanks, disease diagnosis and treatment as well as preventative care and cleaning.
• Responsible for overseeing maintenance of tanks and equipment used in larval, nursery grow out and packing operations.
• Perform work in daily operations of live food and fish productions, fish cultures and assist invertebrate production facilities.
• Assist with development of F1 and f2 breeding stocks plus development of specialized Broodstock holding facilities.
• Assist with the regular fish breeding and egg collecting task.
• Actively promote the health and welfare of all stocks during packing and transit to their final destination.
• Train and supervise staff in the use of the equipment and consumables, as well as the handling of algae culture.
