Professional Automobile Services Ltd (ProAMS) is seeking an experienced and technically proficient Workshop Manager to lead and oversee its automotive workshop operations in Nigeria. The successful candidate will combine strong hands-on diagnostic expertise with workshop leadership, workflow management, quality control, technician development, and operational planning.
This is a hands-on technical management position, requiring the ability to diagnose complex mechanical, electrical, electronic, and drivability faults while effectively supervising technicians and ensuring vehicles are repaired safely, efficiently, and to professional standards. The role will also play an important part in the start-up, operational readiness, training, and development of the workshop, including the transfer of technical knowledge to Nigerian technicians and junior technical personnel.
Workshop Manager
Qualifications:
- Relevant technical qualification, diploma, certification, or equivalent practical automotive training.
- Minimum 8 years of progressive automotive workshop/service experience, preferably including dealership or recognized professional service-center experience.
- Minimum 3 years of experience in a workshop supervisory, team-lead, or management role.
- Strong and current hands-on diagnostic and fault-finding capability; this is not a purely administrative position.
- Experience with modern automotive diagnostic equipment, scan tools, workshop information systems, and technical service information.
- Experience with Toyota/Lexus, Mercedes-Benz, or other internationally recognized automotive brands is strongly preferred.
- Knowledge or practical exposure to hybrid and electric vehicles (HEV/EV) is an advantage.
- Demonstrated experience in training, mentoring, coaching, or developing automotive technicians.
- Strong knowledge of mechanical, electrical, electronic, diagnostic, and vehicle drivability systems.
- Ability to interpret wiring diagrams, diagnostic results, technical information, and manufacturer repair procedures.
- Strong problem-solving ability and a structured approach to automotive fault diagnosis.
- Good understanding of workshop workflow, quality control, technician productivity, and repair processes.
- Strong leadership and people-management skills.
- Good organizational, planning, time-management, and decision-making skills.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality and first-time-fix performance.
- Good written and spoken English, with the ability to communicate technical information clearly.

Responsibilities:
Workshop Operations and Workflow
- Plan, direct, and coordinate day-to-day workshop operations.
- Allocate repair orders according to technician skills, workload, job complexity, and completion priorities.
- Monitor workshop capacity, bay utilization, work-in-progress, turnaround times, and technician loading.
- Ensure repair jobs progress efficiently from diagnosis through repair, quality control, testing, and vehicle release.
- Identify workflow bottlenecks, operational delays, and resource constraints and implement appropriate corrective actions.
- Coordinate closely with Service Advisors, Parts personnel, technicians, and other departments to minimize delays.
- Monitor job progress and ensure work is completed within agreed schedules and quality requirements.
Technical Leadership
- Provide hands-on technical leadership for complex mechanical, electrical, electronic, diagnostic, and drivability faults.
- Review difficult diagnostic cases and promote systematic fault-finding rather than unnecessary parts replacement.
- Provide technical guidance for Toyota, Lexus, Mercedes-Benz, and other internationally recognized vehicle brands serviced by ProAMS.
- Provide appropriate technical support for hybrid and electric vehicle work where applicable.
- Interpret diagnostic results, wiring diagrams, service information, technical bulletins, and manufacturer procedures.
- Ensure technicians follow correct diagnostic and repair procedures.
- Ensure proper use of diagnostic equipment, scan tools, special tools, lifts, and workshop machinery.
- Escalate highly specialized or technically complex cases when additional expertise or manufacturer support is required.
- Stay updated on modern automotive technologies, diagnostic methods, and repair procedures.
Quality Control
- Establish and enforce effective workshop quality-control procedures.
- Ensure appropriate final inspections, functional testing, and road testing are completed before vehicle release.
- Review completed repairs to ensure work meets required technical and safety standards.
- Investigate repeat repairs, comebacks, and customer complaints and determine their root causes.
- Implement corrective actions to prevent recurring technical problems.
- Promote a strong first-time-fix culture throughout the workshop.
- Ensure repair orders and technical documentation accurately record diagnosis, work performed, parts used, and technical findings.
Team Leadership and Performance
- Supervise, coach, and evaluate technicians and workshop personnel.
- Set clear expectations for productivity, quality, attendance, safety, conduct, teamwork, and professionalism.
- Conduct regular team briefings, toolbox meetings, and technical discussions.
- Identify technician skills gaps and recommend appropriate training or performance-improvement measures.
- Assist Management with technical interviews, practical assessments, recruitment, onboarding, and performance reviews.
- Promote teamwork, accountability, integrity, continuous improvement, and professional conduct.
- Develop technicians and junior personnel into capable and independent automotive professionals.
Customer and Service Advisor Support
- Provide technical support to Service Advisors when explaining complex faults, repairs, and recommended work.
- Assist in resolving technical customer complaints professionally and effectively.
- Support accurate repair estimates through proper identification of required labor, parts, procedures, and diagnostic requirements.
- Help ensure technical recommendations are properly supported by diagnostic findings.
- Promote transparency, professionalism, and customer confidence throughout the repair process.
Health, Safety, Housekeeping, and Compliance
- Enforce workshop health and safety procedures, PPE requirements, and safe working practices.
- Ensure vehicles, lifting equipment, tools, machinery, batteries, oils, chemicals, and other materials are handled safely.
- Maintain clean, organized, and professional workshop areas.
- Ensure technicians follow appropriate procedures when working under vehicles and with mechanical and electrical systems.
- Report safety incidents and ensure appropriate corrective actions are implemented.
- Ensure compliance with ProAMS policies, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and lawful Management instructions.
Tools, Equipment, and Asset Control
- Ensure proper and responsible use of workshop tools, diagnostic equipment, vehicle lifts, machinery, and other assets.
- Establish effective tool-control and equipment-maintenance practices.
- Monitor equipment inspection, calibration, servicing, and maintenance requirements where applicable.
- Identify operational requirements for additional diagnostic tools, special tools, machinery, and technical equipment.
- Recommend additional equipment when operationally justified.
Parts and Repair Coordination
- Coordinate with Parts personnel to ensure correct identification and timely availability of required parts.
- Reduce avoidable delays caused by incorrect, incomplete, or unavailable parts.
- Verify that parts replacement is supported by proper diagnosis and technical justification.
- Help prevent unnecessary or unjustified parts replacement.
- Support proper handling, identification, and documentation of removed or replaced parts.
Strategic Responsibilities During Start-Up
- Assist Management in commissioning the workshop and validating operational readiness before and during commercial launch.
- Review workshop layout, bay allocation, workflow, equipment placement, and operational procedures and recommend improvements.
- Develop, review, and implement workshop SOPs, checklists, and technical work instructions.
- Establish consistent standards for diagnosis, repair, testing, quality control, and documentation.
- Advise Management on specialized tools, diagnostic equipment, machinery, and technical resources required for workshop operations.
- Assist in establishing staffing structures, technician skill levels, job allocation practices, and reporting routines.
- Help establish a workplace culture based on integrity, accountability, safety, teamwork, continuous improvement, and customer satisfaction.
- Provide Management with regular recommendations regarding operations, staffing, equipment, training, and technical capability.
Training and Knowledge Transfer
- Actively train, coach, and mentor Nigerian technicians and junior technical personnel.
- Conduct at least one structured technical training or coaching session each month, subject to operational requirements.
- Provide hands-on coaching in diagnostics, repair methods, safe working practices, equipment operation, and quality standards.
- Develop or contribute to technical training materials, checklists, and internal reference documents.
- Maintain and review technician skills assessments and identify individual development priorities.
- Develop capable local technicians and potential future supervisors to ensure technical knowledge and skills are retained within ProAMS.
- Encourage continuous technical learning and professional development among workshop personnel.
Management Reporting
- Prepare and provide reports on workshop productivity and operational efficiency.
- Monitor and report work-in-progress and ageing jobs.
- Report quality performance, repeat repairs, comebacks, and corrective actions.
- Monitor technician performance, attendance, skills development, and training requirements.
- Report completed training activities and identified skills gaps.
- Report safety incidents, corrective actions, and outstanding safety concerns.
- Monitor equipment condition and report maintenance or replacement requirements.
- Identify operational challenges and provide practical recommendations for improvement.
- Provide Management with relevant technical and operational information to support decision-making.
