Water Treatment Plant Operator
Qualifications:
- Technical or vocational education in Water Treatment Technology, Environmental Technology, Chemical Technology, Mechanical Technology, or a related field is preferred, subject to the employer’s requirements.
- Relevant experience operating or maintaining a water treatment plant or industrial water treatment system is preferred.
- Experience in an industrial facility, cement plant, manufacturing plant, or utility operation is an advantage.
- Basic knowledge of water treatment processes, including filtration, sedimentation, disinfection, and chemical dosing, as applicable.
- Familiarity with pumps, valves, filters, tanks, pipelines, and water treatment control systems.
- Ability to monitor operating readings and identify abnormal equipment or process conditions.
- Basic knowledge of water quality testing, sample collection, and recording test results.
- Understanding of water treatment chemicals and safe chemical handling procedures.
- Familiarity with routine equipment inspection, cleaning, and preventive maintenance practices.
- Ability to maintain accurate operating logs, water quality records, and maintenance reports.
- Knowledge of workplace safety, environmental protection, and proper PPE use.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to follow standard operating procedures.
- Good troubleshooting, observation, and problem-solving skills.
Responsibilities:
- Operate and monitor water treatment plant equipment and systems according to approved operating procedures.
- Monitor water intake, filtration, treatment, storage, and distribution processes.
- Operate pumps, valves, filters, tanks, dosing systems, and other water treatment equipment.
- Monitor operating parameters such as flow rate, pressure, water levels, and treatment system performance.
- Conduct routine inspections to ensure equipment and treatment processes are functioning properly.
- Collect water samples from designated points for routine testing and laboratory analysis.
- Perform basic water quality tests, including pH, turbidity, chlorine residual, and other parameters as required by the treatment process.
- Monitor the use and dosage of treatment chemicals in accordance with approved procedures.
- Handle, store, and prepare water treatment chemicals safely and according to manufacturer instructions.
- Check filters, membranes, pipelines, tanks, and other system components for leaks, blockages, damage, or abnormal operation.
- Perform routine cleaning, backwashing, flushing, and other treatment system maintenance activities as required.
- Monitor pumps and motors for unusual noise, vibration, overheating, or reduced performance.
- Identify operational abnormalities and report equipment faults or water quality deviations to the supervisor.
- Coordinate with maintenance personnel to arrange repairs and resolve equipment problems.
- Maintain adequate chemical supplies and report shortages of reagents, consumables, and replacement parts.
- Record operating readings, water quality results, chemical consumption, equipment inspections, and maintenance activities.
- Ensure treated water meets the applicable quality requirements and operational specifications.
- Follow startup, shutdown, and emergency operating procedures.
- Assist with preventive maintenance activities to improve equipment reliability and reduce operational interruptions.
- Maintain cleanliness and organization in the treatment plant, chemical storage areas, and surrounding workspaces.
- Follow occupational health and safety procedures, including the use of appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Comply with chemical handling, confined-space, electrical safety, and other applicable work procedures when performing assigned tasks.
- Follow environmental requirements for wastewater discharge, chemical waste handling, and spill prevention, as applicable.
- Coordinate with supervisors and other utility personnel to maintain reliable water treatment operations.
- Perform other water treatment, utility operation, and maintenance duties assigned by management.
