PIGGERY WORKER
Qualifications:
- At least 3 years of recent and relevant work experience in piggery operations.
- Previous employment as a Piggery Worker on a commercial pig farm.
- Must hold a bachelor’s degree in one of the following fields:
- Agriculture
- Animal Science
- Animal Husbandry
- Practical experience in pig breeding, farrowing, nursery, and growing-finishing operations.
- Knowledge of pig reproduction, piglet care, feeding, animal health monitoring, and farm management practices.
- Understanding of commercial pig production systems, biosecurity, farm hygiene, and animal welfare requirements.
- Ability to recognize signs of illness, injury, stress, and abnormal behavior in pigs.
- Good English communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license and be able to drive four-wheeled vehicles.
- Ability to maintain accurate farm production records and follow written and verbal instructions.
- Physically fit and capable of performing routine livestock and farm duties.
- Strong observation, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Reliable, hardworking, responsible, and able to work independently and as part of a team
Responsibilities:
Pig Breeding and Reproduction
- Assist with breeding operations and follow established farm breeding programs.
- Monitor breeding sows and gilts and observe signs of heat and readiness for mating.
- Assist with mating or artificial insemination procedures as directed by qualified farm personnel.
- Maintain accurate records of breeding activities, pregnancy status, and expected farrowing dates.
- Monitor pregnant sows and prepare farrowing areas before delivery.
Farrowing and Piglet Care
- Monitor sows during farrowing and assist with routine farrowing activities.
- Provide appropriate care for newborn piglets, including identification, weighing, and recordkeeping as required.
- Monitor piglet health, feeding, growth, and general condition.
- Identify weak, injured, or sick piglets and report them promptly to the supervisor.
- Assist with routine piglet management procedures in accordance with farm protocols and animal welfare requirements.
Nursery Operations
- Transfer weaned piglets to nursery facilities according to farm procedures.
- Monitor piglet feeding, water supply, growth, and overall health.
- Maintain suitable housing conditions, temperature, ventilation, and cleanliness.
- Observe pigs for signs of illness, stress, or abnormal behavior and report concerns.
- Assist with cleaning, disinfecting, and preparing nursery pens between production cycles.
Growing and Finishing Operations
- Monitor growing and finishing pigs to ensure proper feeding, growth, and welfare.
- Provide feed and clean drinking water according to established feeding schedules.
- Observe feed intake, body condition, and growth performance.
- Maintain clean, dry, and well-ventilated pens and housing facilities.
- Assist with sorting, weighing, moving, and preparing pigs for transfer or market when required.
Farm Hygiene, Health, and Safety
- Clean and disinfect pig housing, pens, equipment, and work areas.
- Follow farm biosecurity procedures to prevent the introduction and spread of diseases.
- Monitor pigs for signs of illness, injury, parasites, or unusual behavior.
- Assist with routine health monitoring and approved treatment procedures under appropriate supervision.
- Handle animals safely and humanely in accordance with animal welfare standards.
- Follow workplace health and safety procedures and use personal protective equipment (PPE) when required.
- Maintain and use farm tools, equipment, and machinery safely.
Records and General Farm Operations
- Maintain accurate records of breeding, farrowing, piglet survival, feeding, treatments, mortality, and growth performance.
- Report animal health concerns, equipment problems, and production irregularities to the farm supervisor.
- Assist with feed inventory monitoring and the proper storage of feed and farm supplies.
- Operate farm vehicles or equipment when authorized and appropriately licensed.
- Coordinate with other farm workers to complete daily production tasks efficiently.
- Perform other related piggery and livestock management duties assigned by farm management.
