PRODUCTION MANAGER (Plastics Recovery & Sorting)
Qualifications:
- At least 5 years of experience running production in heavy industry, manufacturing, mining, materials processing, recycling, or a closely related environment.
- Proven experience in plastics recovery, polymer sorting, or resource recovery.
- Experience leading a small production crew, including staff rostering, training, coaching, and performance improvement.
- Hands-on experience operating and managing a sorting or separation plant.
- Practical experience with material separation technologies such as optical, near-infrared, X-ray, eddy current, or density separation.
- Comfortable and experienced operating a skid steer and forklift.
- Strong understanding of production processes, material handling, sorting, separation, and plant operations.
- Able to monitor production performance and identify opportunities for improved efficiency and recovery rates.
- Strong practical troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
- Able to identify equipment or process issues and take appropriate corrective action.
- Experience working in heavy industrial, manufacturing, mining, recycling, or materials-processing environments.
- Strong leadership and team-management skills.
- Able to motivate, train, and develop employees through practical coaching and supervision.
- Good understanding of workplace health and safety requirements in an industrial environment.
- Physically capable of working in a hands-on production and plant environment.
- Able to safely operate mobile plant and material-handling equipment.
- Strong attention to detail, particularly in material sorting and product quality.
- Good organizational and time-management skills.
- Reliable, proactive, practical, and results-oriented.
- Able to work independently while coordinating effectively with production and maintenance teams.
Responsibilities:
- Manage and oversee daily production activities within the plastics recovery and sorting plant.
- Plan, organize, and monitor production activities to meet operational targets and processing requirements.
- Supervise a small production crew and coordinate daily work assignments.
- Prepare and manage staff rosters to ensure adequate production coverage.
- Train, coach, and support team members to improve their skills, productivity, and work quality.
- Lead by example through hands-on involvement in plant operations and material processing.
- Operate and monitor sorting and separation equipment used in plastics recovery.
- Oversee the processing and separation of recovered plastics and other recyclable materials.
- Monitor optical and near-infrared sorting systems and ensure proper separation performance.
- Work with X-ray, eddy current, density separation, or other material separation technologies when applicable.
- Identify and address issues affecting sorting accuracy, throughput, product quality, or plant efficiency.
- Monitor production rates, material flows, equipment performance, and processing outputs.
- Inspect recovered materials and ensure appropriate sorting and quality standards are maintained.
- Coordinate material feeding, sorting, processing, storage, and movement within the facility.
- Assist with equipment changeovers, adjustments, cleaning, and routine operational checks.
- Identify equipment malfunctions and coordinate corrective action with maintenance personnel.
- Operate a skid steer and forklift for material handling and production support.
- Safely move, load, unload, and position recyclable materials, products, bins, and other plant materials.
- Ensure proper housekeeping and maintain clean, organized production and processing areas.
- Monitor workplace conditions and address operational hazards promptly.
- Enforce safe work practices, site procedures, and appropriate use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Conduct or participate in toolbox meetings, safety briefings, and production meetings.
- Monitor crew performance and provide feedback to improve productivity and work practices.
- Maintain production records, operational reports, and relevant processing information.
- Identify opportunities to improve production efficiency, material recovery rates, product quality, and waste reduction.
- Coordinate with management, maintenance personnel, and other operational teams to resolve production issues.
- Perform other production management, plant operation, and recycling-related duties assigned by management.
