Horticulturist
Qualifications:
- Knowledge and ability to use agriculture tools and equipment.
- Horticulturist will be responsible for the entire farm operation both in the greenhouses and open fields. These include growing crops at all the stages of plants from sowing seeds to harvesting and packaging the harvest.
Responsibilities:
- Follow the procedures and guidelines in all stage of plant growth and farm operation.
- Implement routine daily activities of the general operations in greenhouses.
- Raise healthy, disease free seedlings in the nursery.
- Inspect for pets and disease on daily basis and implement preventive measures.
- Make ready the greenhouse for new plant cycle such as cleaning, washing the nets, preparing grow bags etc.
- Check proper functioning of irrigating pipes and drippers before transplanting seedlings.
- Observe and analyze plant growth, fruit formation, fruit growth and ripening.
- Apply bio-pesticides to control diseases, pests, and viruses.
- Ensure the workers in the greenhouse wear clean uniform all the time and maintain hygienic standard.
- Record monthly use of seeds, fertilizer, biopesticides, planting materials, packaging materials, and maintain enough stock all the time.
- Prepare reports that include observations, findings, result and recommendations.
- Involve in open field cultivation.
- Carry out other activities relating to farm operation.

Employer Overview:
Hortifarm is a small island of 8.7 hectare in Noonu Atoll being developed as an experimental island test the viability of commercial scale agriculture in selected products like melons, tomatoes, capsicum and herbs in the Maldivian eco-system.
The island will use the most modern and efficient environment friendly technologies and determine which agricultural products could be commercially harvested and marketed in the small resource depleted logistically challenging Maldivian Environment.
Environment friendly technologies and innovations that include tunnel cultivation, fertigation and drip irrigation systems will be studied and customized for the island environment.
Additionally Post-harvest technology including grading & specialized packaging will be implemented. The island will also develop temperature controlled packaging and storage facilities such the products reach the market with maximum freshness and shelf life.
The developers are determined to invest to determine which agricultural products offer commercial viability and use the experience and skill base to setup a sustainable, commercially viable production, post harvest and marketing value chain for the Maldives and beyond.

I have a solid 5 years work experience as an Agricultural Technician in the Department of Agriculture – Southern Cebu Farming System Research and Development Satellite Station. I possess a good understanding and excellent knowledge of using different tools, equipment in Agriculture. In my current job, I have successfully performed various tasks and responsibilities like driving a car during field demo in the field; I have drivers licensed. I can also drive tractor in the field, collected soil for soil analysis, assisted in the development and implementation of integrated pest management programs, conducted field inspections to assess crop health, identify nutrient deficiencies, and recommend appropriate fertilization practices and assisted in the planning and execution of crop planting, including seed selection, spacing, and planting techniques, operating maize Sheller, planting and harvesting maize, rice grains, watermelon, sorghum and other vegetable and plant variety and even growing and harvesting mushrooms. I also had experience in handling chicken and hog in our livestock area. Repair and install water irrigations.
I am able to work in a fast-paced busy environment. I am self-motivated with the ability to work independently with minimal supervision. I am willing to work in a standing position for extended periods of time. I am willing to work long hours in bending, crouching and kneeling. I have a positive work ethic and attitude and am willing to work under pressure. I can handle multiple tasks simultaneously. I can carry things up to 50kg. I am highly motivated, detail-oriented, and passionate about contributing to the advancement of agricultural technology. I am eager to apply my knowledge and skills to support your organization’s mission and goals.
