Bundaberg Sugar Ltd is seeking a highly experienced Boilermaker (Sugar Mill) to join its sugar milling operations in Australia. The position requires extensive hands-on experience in sugar mill boilermaking, welding, fabrication, pipework, structural steelwork, mill component rebuilding, and seasonal maintenance. The successful candidate will support crushing-season maintenance and off-season overhauls, fabrication, and repair activities to ensure sugar mill equipment remains safe, reliable, and ready for production.
BOILERMAKER (SUGAR MILL)
Qualifications:
- Graduate of Welding, Metal Fabrication, or a related technical program.
- Boilermaker or Metal Fabricator qualification.
- Minimum 7 years of sugar mill boilermaking experience, with 10 years preferred.
- Direct sugar mill experience is required.
- Overseas sugar mill experience is accepted.
- Proven experience in both crushing-season maintenance and off-season overhaul/fabrication.
- Current Pressure Welding qualification is preferred.
- Strong practical experience in industrial pipework fabrication, installation, repair, and maintenance.
- Experience fabricating structural steel, walkways, stairs, platforms, supports, frames, and related mill structures.
- Strong stick welding (SMAW) skills.
- MIG and TIG welding experience is an advantage.
- Experience in roller arcing, hard-facing, and rebuilding sugar mill components is preferred.
- Proficiency in oxy-acetylene cutting and heating.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, fabrication drawings, weld symbols, and technical specifications.
- Strong knowledge of welding procedures, fabrication methods, hot-work safety, and industrial maintenance practices.
- Overhead crane experience is an advantage.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship.
- Physically fit and capable of performing demanding hands-on work in a sugar mill environment.
- Willing to work during crushing seasons, maintenance shutdowns, and off-season overhaul periods as required.
- Ability to work effectively with engineers, fitters, mechanics, operators, and other trades personnel.
- Reliable, hardworking, safety-conscious, and able to work under demanding production and maintenance schedules.
- IELTS 6.0 or equivalent is an advantage.
Responsibilities:
- Perform boilermaking, welding, metal fabrication, repair, and maintenance work on sugar mill equipment and structures.
- Carry out maintenance activities during the sugar crushing season, responding to equipment repairs and fabrication requirements.
- Participate in off-season mill overhauls, equipment rebuilding, fabrication, and major maintenance projects.
- Fabricate, install, repair, and modify industrial pipework used throughout the sugar mill.
- Measure, mark, cut, fit, tack, weld, and finish pipework and metal components according to drawings and specifications.
- Fabricate and repair structural steelwork, walkways, stairs, platforms, handrails, supports, frames, and access structures.
- Perform welding repairs and fabrication on sugar mill machinery, plant structures, chutes, guards, supports, and other components.
- Perform stick welding (SMAW) for heavy-duty sugar mill fabrication and repair applications.
- Perform MIG and TIG welding where required and appropriate for specific materials and applications.
- Carry out roller arcing, hard-facing, and rebuilding of mill components where required.
- Assist with the rebuilding, repair, and restoration of worn sugar mill components to required operating specifications.
- Perform oxy-acetylene cutting, heating, and related thermal cutting operations.
- Read and interpret engineering drawings, fabrication drawings, weld symbols, specifications, and maintenance instructions.
- Conduct accurate measurements and dimensional checks before, during, and after fabrication and installation.
- Prepare metal surfaces and components for welding, including cleaning, grinding, cutting, beveling, and joint preparation.
- Assist with the installation, positioning, alignment, and securing of fabricated components and structures.
- Use overhead cranes and other approved lifting equipment for safe handling and positioning of heavy components where required.
- Inspect welds, fabricated structures, pipework, and repaired components to ensure quality and structural integrity.
- Identify damaged, worn, cracked, or defective components and recommend appropriate repair or replacement.
- Work closely with fitters, engineers, mechanics, production personnel, and other trades during maintenance and shutdown activities.
- Participate in planned maintenance shutdowns and major sugar mill repair and fabrication projects.
- Follow welding, hot-work, lifting, isolation, permit-to-work, and workplace safety procedures.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe fabrication and maintenance work area.
- Maintain proper care and safe operation of welding machines, cutting equipment, grinders, power tools, and other fabrication equipment.
- Report unsafe conditions, defective tools, equipment problems, and other hazards to supervisors.
- Support continuous improvement activities aimed at improving equipment reliability, maintenance efficiency, and workplace safety.
- Perform other boilermaking, welding, fabrication, and sugar mill maintenance duties assigned by management.
