Technical Assistant
Qualifications:
Essential
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or Electrical/Electronics Engineering from a reputable institution.
- Minimum of fifteen (15) years’ post-graduation experience, with substantial exposure to at least two of the following: oil and gas operations, power generation, electricity distribution, or large-scale engineering project execution.
- Demonstrated experience supervising or managing capital projects, including FEED studies, EPC execution, and commissioning.
- Strong working knowledge of project management methodologies and tools (PMP, PRINCE2, or equivalent practical experience).
- Excellent written and oral communication skills in English, with the ability to brief senior executives clearly and concisely.
- Track record of operating effectively across diverse cultural and regulatory environments.
- Willingness and ability to relocate to and reside in Nigeria (Abuja).
Desirable
- Chartered Engineer status or equivalent professional registration (e.g. CEng with IMechE / IET, Professional Engineer (PE) licence, or comparable national body).
- Membership of relevant international professional bodies (IMechE, IET, IEEE, SPE, ASME, or equivalent).
- Postgraduate qualification (MSc, MBA, or PhD) in a relevant engineering, energy management, or business discipline.
- Prior experience in a Chairman’s office, GMD’s office, or Chief of Staff capacity within a diversified industrial group.
- International project experience, particularly in emerging markets or crossborder energy and power developments.
- Ability to quickly build familiarity with the host country’s energy and power regulatory framework and stakeholder environment.
- Exposure to power distribution networks (medium-voltage ring main systems, distributed generation, mini-grids), gas-to-power, or upstream production facilities.

- Technical Depth: Comfortable engaging substantively with engineers, OEMs, and contractors on detailed technical questions across multiple disciplines.
- Commercial Acumen: Able to weigh technical decisions against cost, schedule, risk, and strategic value.
- Communication: Polished, articulate, and persuasive in both written reports and verbal briefings; comfortable representing the Chairman before senior executives, regulators, and partners.
- Discretion and Integrity: Unimpeachable in handling confidential and sensitive information.
- Independence of Judgement: Able to form and defend a clear technical view, including where it diverges from project teams or contractors.
- Stamina and Mobility: Prepared for frequent travel, site conditions, and irregular hours.
- Cross-Cultural Adaptability: Able to operate effectively across diverse business environments and with stakeholders from a wide range of backgrounds.
Responsibilities:
Role Overview
- The Technical Assistant to the Chairman serves as the Chairman’s principal technical advisor and project-monitoring representative across the Group’s portfolio, which spans Energy, Oil and Gas, Power Generation and Distribution, and Engineering Services.
- The role exists to give the Chairman timely, accurate, and independent technical insight on operations, ongoing capital projects, partner negotiations, and emerging opportunities and to act as the Chairman’s trusted set of eyes and ears on the ground.
- The successful candidate will combine deep engineering expertise with sound commercial judgement, strong communication ability, and the discretion required to operate at the highest level of the organisation.
Technical Advisory to the Chairman
- Provide the Chairman with technical analysis, briefings, and recommendations on matters spanning upstream and midstream oil and gas operations, power generation and distribution assets, and engineering projects across the Group.
- Translate complex technical issues enginering scopes, FEED studies, EPC submissions, equipment specifications, regulatory positions – into clear, concise summaries to support executive decision-making.
- Review technical documents, contracts, vendor proposals, and consultancy reports prior to the Chairman’s review, flagging risks, gaps, and opportunities.
Project Oversight and Site Representation
- Travel to ongoing project sites across Nigeria (and where required, internationally) to inspect progress, validate contractor performance, and verify alignment with technical specifications, HSE standards, schedule, and budget.
- Represent the Chairman in technical meetings with project teams, EPC contractors, joint venture partners, sector regulators, and government stakeholders.
- Prepare structured site visit reports and project status updates for the Chairman, with clear findings, root causes, and recommended interventions.
Stakeholder Engagement and Coordination
- Liaise with Managing Directors, Project Managers, and technical heads of subsidiary companies on behalf of the Chairman.
- Coordinate with external technical consultants, regulatory bodies, and joint venture partners.
- Support the Chairman in commercial negotiations where technical input is material to the outcome.
Strategic and Business Development Support
- Support evaluation of new investment opportunities, acquisitions, and partnerships from a technical and feasibility perspective.
- Conduct or commission technical due diligence as directed by the Chairman.
- Track sectoral developments regulatory changes, technology shifts, market movements -and brief the Chairman on implications for the Group.
Office of the Chairman
- Maintain absolute confidentiality on all matters passing through the Chairman’s office.
- Manage technical correspondence, action items, and follow-throughs arising from the Chairman’s engagements.
- Undertake any other duties of a technical or strategic nature as may be assigned by the Chairman.

- NBI clearance valid for at least 1 year with “no derogatory / no record on file” remarks
- PEOS certificate
