Pacific International Hospital is seeking a qualified and experienced Registrar – Surgery to join its medical team in Papua New Guinea. The successful candidate will provide surgical assessment, diagnosis, treatment, perioperative care, and clinical management of patients under the supervision of senior surgical specialists. The role requires sound surgical knowledge, strong clinical judgment, effective communication, and the ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary healthcare environment.

REGISTRAR SURGERY

Qualifications:

• Minimum of 5 years of relevant working experience.
• Medical Degree (MD or equivalent).
• Bachelor’s/College Degree in Medical Science or a related field, as applicable to the medical degree requirement.
• Valid medical license and professional registration.
• Completion of required medical internship and residency training.
• Training and experience in General Surgery or a relevant surgical specialty.
• Strong clinical assessment, surgical, diagnostic, and decision-making skills.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work effectively with surgeons, physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals.
• Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced hospital environment and respond appropriately to surgical emergencies.
• Strong commitment to patient safety, quality clinical care, professional ethics, and confidentiality.
• Advanced Life Support certification is preferred.

Responsibilities:

• Assess patients presenting with surgical conditions and determine appropriate management plans.
• Conduct comprehensive medical histories and physical examinations.
• Perform preoperative assessments and prepare patients for surgical procedures.
• Assist senior surgeons and specialists in surgical procedures and other operative interventions.
• Provide appropriate postoperative care and monitor patients for complications.
• Participate in surgical ward rounds, outpatient consultations, emergency assessments, and clinical handovers.
• Monitor patients’ vital signs, laboratory results, imaging findings, and clinical progress.
• Recognize and promptly respond to postoperative complications and acute surgical emergencies.
• Assist in the stabilization and management of patients requiring urgent surgical intervention.
• Perform appropriate clinical and minor surgical procedures within the scope of training, competency, and hospital protocols.
• Request and interpret relevant laboratory investigations and diagnostic imaging.
• Develop and document appropriate treatment plans in consultation with senior medical staff.
• Maintain accurate, complete, and timely patient medical records and surgical documentation.
• Communicate patient status, treatment plans, and clinical findings clearly during referrals and handovers.
• Work closely with surgeons, anesthetists, nurses, allied health professionals, and other members of the healthcare team.
• Provide appropriate information and support to patients and their families regarding treatment and surgical care.
• Follow hospital policies, infection prevention procedures, patient safety standards, and clinical guidelines.
• Maintain professional and ethical standards and comply with applicable medical regulations in Papua New Guinea.
• Participate in clinical audits, case reviews, surgical teaching, quality improvement activities, and continuing professional development.
• Perform other clinical and surgical duties within the scope of qualification and as assigned by senior medical staff.
