Job Talent is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Photonic Design Engineer to work in Belgium. The successful candidate will be responsible for designing, modeling, simulating, and optimizing integrated photonic circuits (PICs) and semiconductor devices. The role requires strong expertise in integrated photonics, III-V semiconductor devices, PIC layout, optical/electrical/thermal modeling, and semiconductor fabrication processes. The candidate will work closely with multidisciplinary engineering and research teams to develop high-performance photonic devices and support their characterization, optimization, and productization.
PHOTONIC DESIGN ENGINEER
Qualifications:
- At least 5 years of hands-on experience in integrated photonics design and semiconductor device engineering.
- Strong knowledge of III-V semiconductor devices, semiconductor lasers, SOAs, and integrated optics.
- Experience with PIC layout and design tools, such as IPKISS, GDSFactory, or equivalent.
- Proficient in Lumerical (FDTD/MODE/CHARGE/HEAT), COMSOL, PhotonDesign, or similar simulation tools.
- Experience with optical, electrical, thermal, and multiphysics modeling and simulation.
- Knowledge of PIC fabrication, cleanroom processes, PDKs, design rules, and heterogeneous integration.
- Experience in device characterization, data analysis, yield optimization, and productization is an advantage.
- Must be a Master’s Degree or PhD holder in Photonics, Optical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics, Microelectronics, or a related field.
- Strong understanding of photonic device physics, semiconductor engineering, and integrated optical systems.
- Ability to analyze complex simulation and experimental data and translate results into practical design improvements.
- Strong technical, analytical, problem-solving, and research skills.
- Good attention to detail and ability to work accurately with advanced photonic design and simulation tools.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary engineering, research, fabrication, and testing teams.
- Strong technical communication and documentation skills.
Responsibilities:
- Design and develop integrated photonic circuits (PICs) and semiconductor optical devices for advanced photonics applications.
- Develop and optimize photonic components and circuits using appropriate design methodologies and simulation tools.
- Work with III-V semiconductor devices, semiconductor lasers, semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs), and integrated optics.
- Create and review PIC layouts using design tools such as IPKISS, GDSFactory, or equivalent platforms.
- Develop photonic layouts while following applicable process design kits (PDKs), design rules, and fabrication requirements.
- Perform optical, electrical, thermal, and multiphysics simulations to evaluate device and circuit performance.
- Use simulation platforms such as Lumerical FDTD, MODE, CHARGE, HEAT, COMSOL, PhotonDesign, or equivalent tools.
- Analyze simulation results and optimize device structures, layouts, and operating parameters.
- Evaluate the impact of optical, electrical, and thermal effects on photonic device performance.
- Support the design of semiconductor devices for fabrication and integration into photonic platforms.
- Collaborate with fabrication and process teams regarding PIC manufacturing requirements and design-for-fabrication considerations.
- Apply knowledge of cleanroom processes, PIC fabrication technologies, PDKs, design rules, and heterogeneous integration.
- Review designs for manufacturability, reliability, performance, and compatibility with fabrication processes.
- Support device characterization and analyze experimental and measurement data.
- Compare simulation results with experimental data to identify performance gaps and opportunities for improvement.
- Assist in optimizing device yield, performance, and process robustness.
- Investigate technical issues related to photonic device design, fabrication, simulation, and testing.
- Prepare technical documentation, simulation reports, design files, analysis results, and engineering records.
- Collaborate with optical, electrical, semiconductor, process, and other multidisciplinary engineering teams.
- Contribute to research, development, prototyping, and productization of photonic devices and integrated optical technologies.
- Stay updated on developments in integrated photonics, semiconductor devices, PIC technologies, and photonic manufacturing.
- Perform other photonic design and semiconductor engineering duties assigned by management.
