Bundaberg Sugar Ltd is seeking an experienced Diesel Mechanic (Cane Supply) to support the maintenance and repair of diesel-powered equipment, locomotives, heavy machinery, and vehicles used in cane supply operations. The successful candidate will perform engine servicing, mechanical repairs, troubleshooting, component rebuilding, and preventive maintenance while maintaining high standards of safety, reliability, and equipment performance.
DIESEL MECHANIC (CANE SUPPLY)
Qualifications:
- Graduate of Automotive, Diesel Technology, Heavy Equipment, or a related technical program.
- Holds a recognized Diesel Mechanic or Diesel Fitter qualification.
- Minimum of 7 years of relevant experience, with 10 years preferred.
- Strong experience in diesel engine servicing, repair, and rebuilding.
- Locomotive maintenance experience is preferred.
- Experience with Caterpillar, Detroit Diesel, and Cummins engines and equipment.
- Experience with Baldwin, Hunslet, Comeng, or DH-series locomotives is an advantage.
- Strong knowledge of transmissions, torque converters, reversing boxes, and final drives.
- Experience in hydraulic, pneumatic, and auto-electrical troubleshooting.
- Knowledge and experience in safe energy isolation across mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems.
- Proven heavy equipment repair experience involving backhoes, excavators, forklifts, trucks, and compressors.
- Railway wheelset and bearing experience is preferred.
- Experience using CMMS and maintaining accurate maintenance records.
- HPCO experience is preferred.
- Forklift experience or certification is an advantage.
- Dogging experience or certification is an advantage.
- Experience operating or working with 8-tonne trucks is an advantage.
- Physically fit and capable of performing hands-on maintenance and repair work in an industrial environment.
- Strong troubleshooting, problem-solving, attention to detail, and mechanical diagnostic skills.
- Good teamwork and communication skills.
- IELTS 6.0 or equivalent is an advantage.
Responsibilities:
- Perform inspection, servicing, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of diesel engines and heavy equipment.
- Diagnose mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and auto-electrical faults using appropriate tools and diagnostic procedures.
- Service, repair, and rebuild diesel engines and related components.
- Perform maintenance and repair work on locomotives and rail equipment used in cane supply operations.
- Work with Caterpillar, Detroit Diesel, and Cummins engines and equipment.
- Maintain and repair locomotive systems, including Baldwin, Hunslet, Comeng, DH-series, or similar locomotives where applicable.
- Inspect, service, repair, and rebuild transmissions, torque converters, reversing boxes, and final drives.
- Troubleshoot and repair hydraulic and pneumatic systems used on heavy equipment and mobile machinery.
- Perform auto-electrical troubleshooting and identify electrical faults affecting diesel-powered equipment.
- Maintain and repair heavy equipment such as backhoes, excavators, forklifts, trucks, and compressors.
- Inspect and maintain railway wheelsets, bearings, and associated mechanical components where required.
- Carry out preventive and corrective maintenance according to planned maintenance schedules.
- Conduct mechanical inspections to identify worn, damaged, or defective components before equipment failure occurs.
- Remove, repair, replace, and reinstall mechanical components using appropriate workshop tools and equipment.
- Perform equipment testing after maintenance or repairs to ensure safe and reliable operation.
- Apply proper energy isolation and lockout procedures before carrying out maintenance on mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems.
- Follow safe work procedures when working on heavy machinery, locomotives, vehicles, and other industrial equipment.
- Maintain accurate maintenance records, inspection reports, repair histories, and parts usage through CMMS or other maintenance systems.
- Assist with planned shutdowns, seasonal maintenance, and urgent breakdown repairs.
- Maintain workshop tools, equipment, work areas, and machinery in safe and serviceable condition.
- Coordinate with other mechanics, electricians, operators, supervisors, and maintenance personnel to complete repairs efficiently.
- Operate or assist with forklifts, lifting equipment, and other material-handling equipment when appropriately licensed or authorized.
- Support continuous improvement of equipment reliability, maintenance practices, and workplace safety.
