Overhead Line Operative
Qualifications:
- Electrical Qualifications: Possession of relevant electrical qualifications, such as NVQ Level 2 or 3 in Electrical Installation or Electrical Engineering, is typically required.
- Safety Certifications: Certification in working at heights, first aid, manual handling, and other relevant health and safety courses is essential for compliance with industry regulations and company policies.
- Experience: Previous experience in overhead line work, electrical distribution, or related fields is highly desirable, preferably in a regulated environment such as the electricity industry.
- Technical Skills: Proficiency in the use of hand tools, power tools, and specialized equipment used in overhead line work, as well as knowledge of electrical principles, wiring regulations, and safe working practices.
- Problem-Solving Ability: Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to diagnose and rectify electrical faults, troubleshoot technical issues, and make sound decisions under pressure.
- Communication Skills: Effective verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to communicate technical information clearly and concisely to colleagues, customers, and other stakeholders.
- Physical Fitness: Good physical fitness and stamina, as the role may involve working outdoors in all weather conditions, climbing poles, lifting heavy equipment, and performing physically demanding tasks at heights.
- Driving License: A valid UK driving license is often required, as the role may involve traveling to different work sites and responding to emergency call-outs.
- Attention to Detail: Meticulous attention to detail and accuracy when carrying out inspections, recording data, and completing paperwork to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and company standards.
- Flexibility: Willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and on-call duties, to respond to emergency situations and meet operational needs as required.
Responsibilities:
- Installation and Maintenance: Install, maintain, and repair overhead power lines, including conductors, insulators, poles, and associated equipment, following safety regulations, technical specifications, and company procedures.
- Line Inspection: Conduct routine inspections of overhead lines to identify and rectify defects, damage, or signs of wear and tear, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards and industry best practices.
- Safety Compliance: Adhere to health and safety regulations, policies, and procedures at all times, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), safety harnesses, and fall arrest systems when working at heights.
- Equipment Operation: Operate specialized equipment and machinery such as cherry pickers, cranes, and hydraulic lifts to access overhead lines, install or replace components, and carry out maintenance tasks safely and efficiently.
- Fault Diagnosis and Repair: Diagnose and rectify faults or electrical outages on overhead lines promptly, using appropriate testing equipment, fault location techniques, and troubleshooting methods.
- Emergency Response: Respond to emergency call-outs and incidents, such as power outages, storm damage, or equipment failures, to restore service and minimize disruption to customers and the public.
- Documentation and Reporting: Maintain accurate records of work activities, including job sheets, inspection reports, test results, and inventory records, and submit timely reports to supervisors or management as required.
- Customer Service: Interact with customers, stakeholders, and the public in a professional and courteous manner, addressing enquiries, providing assistance, and resolving complaints or concerns effectively.
- Teamwork: Work collaboratively with colleagues, contractors, and other departments to coordinate activities, share knowledge and expertise, and ensure the safe and efficient operation of overhead line networks.
- Training and Development: Participate in ongoing training and development programs to enhance technical skills, knowledge of safety regulations, and proficiency in operating equipment and tools used in overhead line work.
Requirements:
- Must have a valid passport for more than 3 years
- Employment certificates
- NBI clearance valid for at least 1 year with “no derogatory / no record on file” remarks
- PEOS certificate
